Summer Delight: Solms Astor Sparkling Shiraz

June 28, 2011

With the start of the summer delivering overall stellar weather, I’m doing my best to keep from wearing myself out on my favorite Sauvignon Blancs. To me, a crisp refreshing white is like that perfect pair of summer sandals– worn out by the end of the season.

Luckily, at Andover Liquors I recently stumbled upon an amazing solution to this most dire conundrum– or at least a second pair of favorite sandals to wear out– Solms Astor Cape Jazz Sparkling Shiraz.  It’s fresh, fun, delicious, and the perfect middle ground between a serious red wine and fruity bubbles.

This beautifully balanced sparkling red is a non-vintage wine: a blend of grapes from different years (often labelled as “N.V.”) as many bubbles tend to be.  It hails from South Africa and boasts an amazing deep violet color accompanied by enticing aromas of dark cherry and strawberry. The palate echoes the nose while the fine effervescence tickles both the mouth and nose.

Incredibly friendly and versatile, “Cape Jazz” is made from 100% Shiraz (aka Syrah) grapes–but it doesn’t taste like your typical Shiraz.  Shiraz tends toward the heavier/bolder side of things with ample tannins, intense color, and black pepper & dark chocolate notes on the palate.  This wine shares the intensely beautiful deep color of your typical Shiraz but is a lot fresher and brighter in style.  It’s all about wild, brambly strawberry and the light zing of cherry backed by gentle bubbles– a fruit-driven bubbly perfect for a summer day or evening.

Drink it at room temperature, drink it chilled–drink it any old way and, in my humble taste buds’ (and buddies’) opinions, it is a knockout; I know a wine passes muster when wine connoisseurs and non-wine drinkers alike all smack their lips and plead for more!!

After a long, hot day there is nothing better than popping a deliciously sip-able sparkling red wine. It leaves one feeling fully satisfied and delighted no matter what your day hath wrought.  I highly recommend giving this sparkler a shot this summer!

I’ve actually sort of sworn off Shiraz, but this sounds really good. Might have to try it!

Matt, the sparking Shiraz is so different then Shiraz- I surprise people all the time I serve it with hamburgers when I cook them on the grille. Its always a crowd pleaser. Give it a shot! I think you will really enjoy.
