When Winter Won’t Quit…

It’s fff…fffr….frrrr…

This should NOT be happening in April...

It’s COLD!!!! To top it off, we have no oil left and we refuse to buy more. It’s April, damn it. What gives?

As the temperature inside the house hovers around 55 degrees I sit in front of the crackling fire, long underwear on under layers of sweats, other pieces of clothing and a couple of fleece blankets piled on top…I’m still feeling a chill in my bones. I need something to take the edge off…so how about a nip of bourbon?

My most recent purchase is a bottle of Black Maple Hill Bourbon, straight out of the heart of Kentucky. It’s a small batch, sour mash aged in white oak casks that clocks in at 47.5abv (95 proof, for those who don’t like math,) and should do the trick.

A bit scotch-like on the nose. Hints of butterscotch pudding with whipped cream, raw sweet corn and oak notes gently perk up the nose. It’s one of the lightest in aromatics I’ve smelled in a bourbon–and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. The palate is a bit lean for what I typically enjoy…but it’s well-balanced, so no complaints here. The mouth is an ethereal mix of creamed corn, white oak notes, nutmeg spice, and a hint of sweet caramel.  It warms me up on the first sip. Man, this is just what i need! No harsh burn, just a gentle warming on the way down. The price point doesn’t hurt either; just a mere $39.99 out of the ol’ wallet. Quite unlike this winter…which has been harsh all around.

    Almost out of Whiskey and looking for something new, this could be it! Is there such a thing as Whiskey that is better suited for the warmer months? Follow up question, is there such a thing as warmer months? 😉

      Warmer months? Hmm…I think I remember those…
      This could be your new whiskey! Might actually be a good selection for those elusive warm days…not too heavy, not too sweet, not “hot” with alcohol. Might be a good pick, especially if you like to throw a couple of cubes in there with it! It mixes pretty well with coke, and I would assume other mixers as well (oh, the horror!)
      On a side note, I did NOT like it in an Old Fashioned…
