A call girl, a Frenchman and country club!

May 10, 2010

So… there may have been some scandal at North Andover Country Club late last week! An infamous call girl dared to show her face at a high profile wine party. Here’s the catch: She was invited!

Get out, right? Nah, French mastermind, Stephan Asseo, of  L’Aventure arrived from Paso Robles, California to share his artisanal creations with some of Andover’s finest. The tasting party showcased four of Stephan’s wines from two different vintages: Estate Cuvée, Côte à Côte, Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Optimus. My personal favorite was L’Aventure’s Côte à Côte, fondly referred to as the “prostitute wine” by Stephan!

“It’s very easy,” he said, commenting upon Côte à Côte’s drinkability. A voluptuous, brambly wine with concentrated flavors that stem from Stephan’s strategic low yields in the vineyard. I think what really drew me to Stephan’s wines revolved around how he strives to work with each new vintage instead of attempting to reproduce last year’s flavor profile. So often with bottle vintages, the idea is to keep the contents consistent year after year. This approach definitely has its place and is appreciated by consumers but there’s just something more artisanal with the “work with what the terroir gave us” approach.

How very French of him! Stephan’s dedication to the earth, the elements and year variation makes him a force to be reckoned with in the sunshine state.

The North Andover Country Club facilitated our wine party of about 20 people and delivered delectable treats as nearly 17 bottles were drained!

I think what made this evening so special in comparison to other tastings was Stephan himself. He gabbed with guests, offered insight that you can’t glean from the back of a bottle and graciously poured his passion into wine goblets for perfect strangers to enjoy. Plus, Stephan said we could go visit him in Paso Robles any time we wanted…

ROAD TRIP TO CALIFORNIA!

Really illustrative writing and use of photos, Laura; your words made me feel like I was on the patio as well! Looks like it was a great time. Inspiring, I’m sure, to hear from the ‘man’ himself. I’ll be back to hear more from you!
